The Los Angeles Lakers hold a 2-0 lead in their playoff series against the Houston Rockets after winning both home games. The results put them in control early, but the context behind those wins is even more striking.
Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic, two of the Lakersā leading scorers, have both been unavailable. They were the teamās top scorers during the regular season and played a central role in the teamās offensive structure.
Despite those absences, JJ Redickās men have delivered two composed performances. Led by LeBron James, they have maintained efficiency and control, producing a level of output that has not been seen before under these conditions.
According to Opta, the Lakers are the first team in NBA history to win two playoff games without two players who each averaged at least 20 points and made 100 or more three-pointers in the same regular season.
That combination highlights the scale of what is missing. Losing that level of scoring and perimeter shooting would usually disrupt any playoff side, especially against an opponent like Houston.
Instead, the Lakers have adjusted effectively. Their offensive structure has remained stable, with multiple players stepping into larger roles while James continues to dictate the pace and decision-making.
The Lakers' 2-0 lead is significant as it marks a historic achievement for the team, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure without key players.
Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic are the key players missing for the Lakers, both of whom were top scorers during the regular season.
LeBron James has performed exceptionally well, leading the Lakers to two composed victories while maintaining efficiency and control.

Reaves is now reportedly nearing a return after progressing through one-on-one work, while Doncic is also back in court activity. However, his timeline remains unclear.
That represents a shift from earlier expectations. The Slovenian star was previously expected to return first, though that now looks uncertain.
The Lakers have managed without both so far, but their eventual returns would certainly boost their chances of avoiding any Rocketsā comeback.
