LSU Tigers football coach Lane Kiffin was the subject of a highly controversial feature story in Vanity Fair that reads like a hit piece on the Ole Miss Rebels, the University of Mississippi, and the Magnolia State at large. Vanity Fairâs official X account shared a snippet from the article that paints Oxford as a racially tense place compared to Baton Rouge, Louisiana:
âWhen he was coaching there, Kiffin says, top recruits would tell him, âHey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents arenât letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi.â That doesnât come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campusâs diversity feels so great: âIt feels like thereâs no segregation.ââ
This piece, predictably, didnât go over well in Mississippi. As 247Sportsâ Chase Parham noted, the lede in Vanity Fairâs piece relayed in Oxford after he took the LSU job.
Lane Kiffin mentioned that top recruits expressed concerns about moving to Oxford, citing racial tensions that were not a concern in Baton Rouge.
The article is viewed as a hit piece due to its portrayal of Oxford as racially tense and its inclusion of a debunked story about Kiffin being run off the road.
The backlash has led to significant criticism from Mississippi residents and media, questioning the article's accuracy and intent.

âYour lede includes a lie the Mississippi Highway Patrol publicly refuted and disingenuous imagery meant to increase emotion. May as well own you wrote a puff piece for access and click purposes,â Parham wrote.

Slateâs Alex Kirschner believes this was âthe most cynical thing Lane has ever attempted.â
Perhaps the worst part about Kiffinâs penchant to be in the spotlight, for good deeds or otherwise, is that pundits in the know, like the SEC Networkâs Paul Finebaum, donât even know if itâs an act or not.
âAfter four hours of talking with Kiffin, Iâm stumped: Is he endearingly sincere or so full of s--t that itâs an art form?â asked Vanity Fairâs Chris Smith, the author of the anti-Mississippi feature.
âI first met him in 2009, and I canât decide either. Lane Kiffin is an introvert, and heâs a drama queen. Heâs sincere, and he doesnât get enough credit for his acting ability. Itâs what makes him fascinating, and itâs what makes him the most polarizing coach in college football,â Finebaum said.
Weâll see how much more Kiffin will have to say, and how much more ragebait he has prepared for the Rebels fanbase, before LSU and Ole Miss clash on September 19 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
