Luis Campusano of the San Diego Padres has been placed on the injured list due to a broken big toe on his left foot, sustained during a game against the Giants. He had previously played with the injury but is now officially sidelined.
San Diego Padres catcher Luis Campusano fouled a ball off his foot in the second game of the series against the Giants in San Francisco and went right back to work. He finished the game 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Freddy Fermin caught Padres’ pitchers on Wednesday, taking a few more foul tips off his face mask and body.
When it was thought that Fermin might need to leave the game, manager Craig Stammen had only one option, emergency catcher Ty France would need to be called into action. There were only two catchers on the roster, and Campusano came in with a badly bruised and painful big toe before the game. Fermin stayed in, and France pinch-hit, giving the Padres the go-ahead runs in a 10-5 victory. In his post-game comments, Stammen stated Campusano would be day-to-day. Campusano was placed on the injured list before the first game against the St. Louis Cardinals with a broken big toe on his left foot.
Catcher Rodolfo Durán, 28, spent 11 years in the minor leagues before his first chance to don a major league uniform. After six years in the Philadelphia Phillies system, he played in the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals systems before signing with the Padres ahead of the 2025 season. He has been with the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas since being signed and has had a good showing in 2025 and so far, this season.

Durán made a phantom appearance with the big-league squad last month when Fermin had another direct hit to his catcher’s mask and was evaluated for a concussion. That visit was as a member of the taxi squad, and he was not added to the roster. Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day IL in order to make a 40-man roster spot for Durán.
Duran went 0-for-3 in his plate appearances, driving a ball to the warning track in his first at-bat but never reached base. Padres starter Michael King praised his performance after the game. “Durán called a hell of a game. I was not surprised, but I guess a little shocked, like having so much composure and maturity during your debut.”
Enrique Rojas of ESPN was at Petco Park for their televised game. He documented Duran in his pregame prep on X and posted this photo of Durán, his wife Laura, and his daughters Ainoa and Ainara after the game.
