Luis Enrique has urged Paris Saint-Germain to 'live up to our status' as champions ahead of their derby against Paris FC. PSG recently secured their fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title and aims to finish the season with a victory.
Coach Luis Enrique has called on Paris Saint-Germain to “live up to our status” as champions ahead of a derby meeting with Paris FC.
PSG lifted their fifth straight Ligue 1 title after beating closest challengers Lens 2-0 on Wednesday, securing a 12th title in 14 years and keeping the team unbeaten in seven games.
The season concludes with a short trip to Paris FC in a derby-day clash on Sunday and Luis Enrique is hoping to finish the campaign on a high.
“This is our last match. We’re champions, but the goal is to win this match,” he told a pre-match press conference on Saturday.
“It’s a derby and we have to live up to our status as French champions.
“We’re happy to play this last match almost like we’re at home, in the sense that we don’t really have to travel.
“The proximity of the two stadiums makes this match very special. Paris FC deserved to stay up; they’re a good team. We want to perform well and play with ambition.
“Sunday’s match will be a real test, to show what we want to build as a team.
“No individual matter is above the collective interest. We are all working to arrive in the best possible condition against PFC and in the Champions League final.”
Lens had been PSG’s nearest rivals this season and Luis Enrique expressed his pleasure at his team’s “resilience” to clinch the Ligue 1 title.
“It was a unique season, as we’ve said regularly,” he added. “I’m very happy with the mentality we showed, the resilience, which is a word I like.
“Lens also had a great season and that made our task difficult. The final victory is magnificent.”
After Sunday’s final league fixture, PSG’s attention turns to the Champions League.
They secured a 6-5 aggregate victory over Bayern Munich in the semi-finals earlier this month to reach the competition’s showpiece on May 30.
The French side are the reigning champions after thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 last year and will meet Arsenal at the Puskas Arena in Budapest later this month.
Looking ahead to the upcoming weeks, Luis Enrique added: “We don’t have the French Cup final to play this season, so we’re going to work hard until the day of the final, carefully studying every aspect we want to work on.
Luis Enrique emphasized that PSG must 'live up to our status' as champions ahead of their derby match against Paris FC.
PSG has won 12 Ligue 1 titles in the last 14 years, including their fifth consecutive title this season.
