HONESDALE — After a prolonged period of struggle to be competitive in the always- rugged Lackawanna League, the Honesdale boys track & field team is finally showing signs of life.
And one of the biggest reasons for this resurgence is the consistently stellar performance of Maddox Johnson.
A versatile junior who specializes in jumps and relays, Johnson’s impressive skill set was on full display during a recent victory on the road at North Pocono.
Johnson powered his way to three individual wins while also playing a key role in a fourth as the Hornets cruised to a 92-54 decision over the Trojans.

“Maddox is one of the hardest workers on the team,” said first year skipper George Howanitz. “He never complains and he’ll do whatever you ask. Maddox is a true team player. He cares more about the team than his own stats.”
Weather permitting Honesdale will be back on the track April 21 versus Delaware Valley. Action gets underway at 4 p.m. in Milford.
Johnson is a multi-sport athlete who’s also plays on the golf team and is an accomplished skier.
A three-year member of the varsity squad, Johnson broke through in several events last spring. The high points of his season were a bronze medal at the Twilight Invitational and a place on the podium at districts.
This year, he’s hoping to help lead the Hornets to a solid showing in both the league and the overall Class AA rankings.

“I’m very excited to see how far we can go as a team this season,” Johnson said. “We have some younger guys, but we already have some chemistry working.”
At North Pocono on April 14, Johnson turned in a scintillating all-round effort. He opened his day with a victory in the long jump (20-0.5), then added wins in the triple jump (39-6.5) and high jump (6-0).
“I’m always pretty happy with my high jump,” he said. “My strengths right now are how fast I can run and high I can jump. If I keep working hard on my form I feel that I could really compete at a high level in all my events.”
Johnson closed out the day by running a blistering leg in the 4x100 relay. He combined with teammates Alex Kerna, Tyler Kolshorn and Karter Mikulak to post a winning time of 45.1.

He’s set some very ambitious goals for himself in 2026, including breaking school records in the high jump (6-5), long jump (22-0) and triple jump (44.0).
Heading into this week’s action, Johnson’s personal bests are: high jump (6-2); long jump (20-0.5); triple jump (41-2.5).
“I’m always reaching to beat the school records in all of the jumping events,” Johnson said. “I think my biggest goal is just to be the best I can be and see how far I can go. I just want to do well and have fun.”
Honesdale is once again competing in Division II of the Lackawanna League against teams like Wallenpaupack Area, Western Wayne, North Pocono and DV.
The boys team currently sports a 2-2 dual meet record, while the girls have also split their four decisions.
Key events remaining on the schedule for the Hornets include: Jordan Relays (April 30); Robert Spagna League Meet (May 5); District 2 Championships (May 11-12); PIAA State Meet (May 22-23).
“The team has made great progress,” Howanitz said. “A lot of our kids have PR’d in their events and their hard work each day at practice will only strengthen their chances to be even better at season’s end.”
