Anthony Olascuaga will defend his WBO flyweight title against Andy Dominguez on July 11 at San Franciscoâs Civic Center Plaza atop a fight card that hopes to break boxingâs attendance record.
The event, which is being organized by Ed Pereiraâs newly formed iVisitBoxing and last week named Sampson Lewkowicz as the lead promoter, is attempting to surpass the record of 135,132 spectators set by Tony Zale vs. Billy Pryor in Milwaukee in 1941.
A press conference will be held on May 7 to formally announce the show, which will stream live on YouTube.
Olascuaga (12-1, 9 KOs) broke out within the boxing world when he replaced Jonathon Gonzalez to challenge then-unified light flyweight titlist Kenshiro Teraji in April 2023. Although Olascuaga did not win, he impressed in his performance, especially taking into consideration that it was only his sixth professional fight.
âPrincesaâ landed another title fight just two bouts after, and this time, he did walk out with the belt wrapped around his waist. Olascuaga stopped Riku Kano in Round 3 to capture the WBO flyweight belt. The Californian has since made five defenses of his championship, and he will be attempting a sixth one in July.
Mexico's Dominguez (13-1, 6 KOs) has won three straight fights since losing to Puerto Rican Olympian and contender Yankiel Rivera. Dominguez had Rivera badly rocked in Round 9 of the bout, but Rivera managed to weather the storm and win a wide unanimous decision. Most recently, Dominguez claimed a split decision over Byron Rojas this past July.
Elsewhere on the card, the WBOâs No. 2-ranked middleweight Vito Mielnicki Jr. will face Gerardo Luis Vergara, while recent super featherweight title challenger Charly Suarez takes on Manuel Avila, and Gurgen Hovhannisyan meets Uila Mauâu in a battle of unbeaten heavyweights.
