Mainz 05 is optimistic about retaining defender Stefan Posch on a permanent basis despite ongoing challenges. The 28-year-old has made a strong impact since his return to the Bundesliga.
Mainz 05 remain hopeful of keeping defensive anchor Stefan Posch despite challenges
Speaking to the Mainzer Allgemeine Zeitung, Mainz 05 sporting director Stefan Posch has revealed that Mainz are actively striving to acquire Austrian defender Stefan Posch on a permanent basis. The former Hoffenheim mainstay has picked up right where he left off since returning to the Bundesliga. All parties involved would like to see the 28-year-old remain in German football.
Posch’s wild swings in form and market valuations moving amongst clubs in Italy’s Serie A, while interesting, definitely leave the 51-times-capped ÖFB international in search of some stability. Since returning to the Bundesliga on a complex transactional arrangement this January, Posch has settled in as the anchor in Mainz head coach Urs Fischer’s back-three.
While Posch hasn’t gotten his name on a Bundesliga scoresheet yet, he’s played a pivotal role in Mainz’s historic Conference League run. The centre-back scored amazing goals in Mainz’s last two UECL victories. In 13 appearances across all competitions thus far, Posch has logged maximum minutes.
As beneficial as a permanent purchase would be for both Posch and Mainz, it remains to be seen if Serie A parent club Como 1907 will be willing to part company with their player. Posch’s current Transfermarkt valuation (€5.5m) doesn’t come close to his true value.
“We definitely wish to keep a player who embodies everything that defines Mainz 05,” Bungert told the local newspaper. “We’re definitely on it and want to keep him longer, but there are issues [with the parent club].“
Mainz 05 is navigating various challenges, including competition from other clubs and the complexities of his current loan arrangement.
Since his return, Stefan Posch has established himself as a key player in Mainz's defense, contributing significantly to the team's performance.
Stefan Posch is currently on loan at Mainz 05, and the club is actively working to secure him on a permanent basis.
