Man City boss Andree Jeglertz on the future of star striker Bunny Shaw
Manchester City Women boss Andree Jeglertz has expressed his hope that Khadija “Bunny” Shaw will sign a contract extension amid rumours of a move to Chelsea.
This has been a seismic week for Manchester City Women, crowned champions of the Women’s Super League (WSL) for the first time in 10 years, thanks to Arsenal’s draw with Brighton. They now also have a chance to get a step closer to a domestic double with an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.
However amidst the triumph and celebrations, the possible departure of one of their main stars casts a sour note. Bunny Shaw, currently the WSL top scorer with 19 goals, is poised to leave City at the end of the season as her contract expires.
Talks have reportedly stalled between Shaw and Man City, with Chelsea emerging as the frontrunners to sign the Jamaican striker on a free transfer.
Head coach Andree Jeglertz, who steered the club to their league triumph, expressed his hope that the player would remain with City, who still have one league match remaining against West Ham, along with one or two in the FA Cup.
“I still hope she’s signing a new contract for Manchester City, definitely,” Jeglertz said on Friday. “But that’s more of a discussion for Therese [Sjogran, director of football] and for people in the club.
Bunny Shaw's contract with Manchester City is set to expire at the end of the season, making her a free agent.
Rumors of Bunny Shaw moving to Chelsea have arisen due to her expiring contract and her status as a top scorer in the WSL.
Bunny Shaw is currently the top scorer in the WSL with 19 goals this season.

“I think right now Bunny Shaw is our player, and she’s here to compete with us and do everything she can this week that we have left of the season. What happens after that is a discussion, not for me to talk about. It’s more for Therese and other people that are communicating with her,” he added.

With Champions League football on the cards again next campaign, after being knocked out in the quarter-finals by Chelsea this season, a player of Shaw’s calibre and with her instincts in front of goal would be a powerful asset for City.
Jeglertz acknowledged that the team might “look different” next season, but his mission to get the best out of the squad would be the same.
“My job is to work with the players I have. And that was my first thing I said when I started in this club, that we have this squad, how do I optimise each player?” he said.
“How do we play until we get the maximum out of Yui Hasegawa, Viv Miedema, Bunny Shaw, or Lauren Hemp and how do we play football so we get the best out of them, which we have done this year, getting the best out of a lot of players.
“Next year, it will look different. It might look different. Some players are coming in, some players are leaving, then we have another squad, or we have exactly the same squad when we start in July, but I don’t know,” he continued.
“We’ll go into the Champions League next year, so no matter what, we definitely need to look into what we need to add to the squad and how we do that. But right now, I have a fantastic squad with so many great players that I definitely would like to continue working with in these coming weeks, and again, let’s see where we are in July,” he concluded.
