After arriving at AS Roma from Flamengo last summer, Wesley has immediately taken to European football. The Brazilian international has been one of Roma’s more impressive players this season. Defensively, Wesley wins his share of one-on-one duels, a trait that is required in the Premier League. In possession, the Brazilian full-back is a weapon going forward, either as an overlapping right-back or he can invert into midfield. Both of those traits would be ideal for a Pep Guardiola side, especially at right-back. Also, Wesley covers the pitch extremely well with his pace and energy. He is almost the ideal player to slot in at right-back for Manchester City.
Also, Wesley is a versatile player who can play in a variety of roles. He can play at right-back and also as a wide midfielder. As per transfermarkt.com, Wesley has played at right-back, and out wide on the right and left for Roma this season. Pep Guardiola likes players who can play in multiple roles and Wesley ticks this box.
In terms of providing cover and competition for Matheus Nunes, Wesley could do exactly that. He is 22 years of age, with the potential to become an elite right-back and player. If City were to sign him, it wouldn’t be expected that Wesley be thrust into a starting role for City. He could come in, learn the ropes and provide quality competition for the right-back role at City. In time Wesley could become Manchester City’s first-choice right-back. But he wouldn’t be expected to make an immediate impact which makes Wesley almost the ideal candidate for City to sign this summer to fill a hole in their squad.
AS Roma’s versatile right-back Wesley has impressed with his performances this season. He has caught the eye of Manchester City and a host of clubs from across Europe. In terms of being the right fit for Pep Guardiola’s squad, Wesley does seem to be the right player to come in at right-back. City will face competition to sign him if they do want to add the Brazilian international this summer. It now remains to be seen if City will go hard to sign a player who ticks a lot of boxes required to be a Manchester City player.
