May 15 (UPI) -- Manchester United plan to hire Michael Carrick as permanent coach, reports say
Sources told The Athletic, The Telegraph and reporter Fabrizio Romano on Friday that the Red Devils offered Carrick a two-year contract, with an option for 2029.
The Red Devils fired former coach Ruben Amorim on Jan. 5. Darren Fletcher took over as interim coach at the time, when the Red Devils were 8-5-7, with just one win over five matches.
Carrick, a former Red Devils midfielder, took over as manager on Jan. 13. The Red Devils (18-7-11) went on to win 10 of 15 games under Carrick. They sit in third place in the Premier League standings, 14 points behind first-place Arsenal (24-5-7) and second-place Manchester City (23-5-8).
They will host Nottingham Forest at 7:30 a.m. EDT Sunday in Manchester, England. The Red Devils will play Brighton in their 2025-26 Premier League finale at 11 a.m. May 24 in Brighton, England.
Carrick was asked about an extension Friday during a news conference, but did not disclose details of a potential pact.
