Marcelo Mayer is hoping he can start a hot streak at the plate after he hit a home run on Friday in the Boston Red Sox’s 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Mayer went 98 at-bats between home runs until he hit a game-tying home run in the top of the seventh inning. It was his first home run since April 3, as Mayer has struggled to get the ball over the fence to begin the year.

Although the Red Sox did get walked off in the bottom of the 10th inning, Mayer hopes he can use the home run to get him on a hot streak.

“Yeah, I mean, those always feel good,” Mayer said postgame on Friday. “You kind of try to ride with that feeing until it goes away, but yeah, you take those and run with those as best you can.”

Mayer was expected to be a key part of Boston’s offense this season, but he’s struggled as he’s hitting .233 with 2 home runs and 9 RBIs. It’s been a slow start for the second baseman, amid Boston’s slow start.

However, Mayer knows he has to be better as he knows the offense has to start turning it around to get Boston back on track.

“We’re all working really hard,” Mayer said. “Obviously, a lot of guys aren’t where they want to be.”
