Scottie Scheffler shot his lowest round at Augusta National with a score of 65, putting him in contention for the Masters. His post-round press conference featured a mix of humor and sharp comments.
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Scottie Scheffler shot 65 on Saturday at Augusta National—his lowest round ever here. It vaulted the two-time Masters champ squarely into contention.
But his press conference after the round had a bit of an edge about it.
To be fair, transcripts aren't the best judge of tone—I was there, and Scottie smiled after most of these quips. There was an edge to them to be sure, but he was also having fun.
With those caveats out of the way, here are four of the best.
1. "Next question"
Question: That was a 65 today. What did it feel like it could have or should have been?
Scheffler: That's just a terrible question. Next question. Awful.
2. "Grass"
Question: (Amid talk about the course conditions). What color would you call these putting surfaces?
**Scheffler (smiling):**I already ripped on one question that wasn't that bad, so I'm not going to rip on another one. (Laughing).
3. "That's not great [question]"
Question: This might qualify as another bad question, but you tended your own pin on 18. Do you remember the last time you've done that here?
Scheffler: Here? Shoot, I don't know. Yeah, that's not great (laughing).
4. "... they can go full Bay Hill and just let [the greens] die"
Question: Tomorrow obviously the golf course is probably playing a little firmer. Do you think you can play with the same aggressiveness as you did today or do you have to dial it back?
Scheffler: It depends on what the leadership here wants to do. It was crazy firm Thursday afternoon when we were coming in. There were virtually no birdie opportunities. ... I mean, they're already pretty firm, so they can just go full Bay Hill and just let them die. It's Augusta. They'll figure it out after that.
