Matt Brash Dealing With Lat Inflammation; Injured List Decision to be Determined
SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners are back in the Pacific Northwest for a six-game homestand, which begins in game one of a three-game set against the Kansas City Royals at 6:45 p.m. PT on Friday at T-Mobile Park.
The Mariners will enter the series with a healthy amount of momentum after a 5-1 mark on their recent six-game road trip. However, the M's weren't able to get through the series against the St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins without some losses.
Right-handed high-leverage reliever Matt Brash was pulled two pitches into his outing against the Twins on Wednesday.
Brash was visibly uncomfortable after his pitches and was dealing with "right side discomfort," per postgame comments from manager Dan Wilson. Brash said he had been dealing with discomfort the entire week but Wednesday was the worst it had felt.
The 27-year-old righty was optimistic that the injury wasn't a serious concern and his early exit was precautionary and it seems like he was correct in that assessment.
Before Friday's game against the Royals, Seattle general manager Justin Hollander provided updates on Brash.
According to imaging, which Hollander and the Mariners received the results of almost right before the former's news scrum in the home dugout at T-Mobile Park, Brash currently has light inflammation in his right lat.
The good news is that there didn't appear to be anything structurally wrong according to the images.
An injured list stint and the length of it is still to-be-determined, per Hollander.
"As I told him after the game in Minnesota, what feels like a long time down in a moment can actually not feel like like anything at all if you're safe and don't miss more time," Hollander said Friday. "The year he ended up having Tommy John (in 2024), when we first thought he was going to be down until June, we were all kind of crestfallen. 'What are we going to do without Matt until June?' And then come June, we would have been thrilled to have Matt, knowing we weren't going to have him until the following May in all likelihood.

"Being smart is certainly our lean. We've been really comfortable with Matt all year long in making sure that we're not putting him in a position to go hurt himself or damage the long-term prospects of the season. I think we'll continue to be conservative, but we don't want to just put him on the (injured list) if that's not what he needs."
Brash has a 0.00 ERA and has struck out eight batters in 11.1 innings pitched across 14 starts this season.
-- Right-handed reliever Carlos Vargas (60-day IL; right lat strain) suffered a setback in his recovery and will have to restart his throwing progression.
-- Third baseman/utility player Brendan Donovan (10-day IL; left groin strain) will begin a rehab assignment with the Double-A Arkansas Travelers on Tuesday or Wednesday. He'll likely be activated and will rejoin the team for its three-game road series against the Chicago White Sox, which takes place May 8-10.
-- Outfielder Victor Robles (10-day IL; right pec strain) will begin a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers on Sunday. He'll be assignment for seven days and Seattle will reassess his condition after.

-- Corner infielder Patrick Wisdom (10-day IL; left oblique strain) will begin a rehab assignment with the Rainiers this weekend.
-- Starting pitcher Bryce Miller (15-day IL; left-oblique strain) will make his fourth rehab start of his current assignment with the High-A Everett AquaSox on May 6. He will have a 65-70-pitch limit and could be activated off the IL depending on how the outing goes.
-- First baseman/outfielder Rob Refsnyder was absent from the lineup Friday against Kansas City despite left-handed starting pitcher Cole Ragans being on the mound for the Royals. Refsnyder is "nursing a couple different little things," per Wilson and is day-to-day. Wilson said they'll get the righty back out "as soon as possible."
-- Minor league right-handed pitcher Teddy McGraw (right biceps inflammation) is scheduled to throw a third live bullpen in his rehabilitation this week, per Hollander.
"I would anticipate (McGraw) is back out at an affiliate fairly soon," Hollander said.
