The biggest question facing every WNBA team in training camp
WNBA training camps open with key questions for each team.
The Dallas Mavericks have a favorable chance of securing a top pick in the 2026 NBA draft, following a successful lottery win last year despite low odds. Their current season performance has positioned them well for another opportunity.

While the 2025-26 season hasnât been a great one for the Dallas Mavericks, the team has a good chance of landing a premium pick in the 2026 NBA draft.
Luckily for Dallas, the team has run into some recent good luck in the draft lottery. The Mavericks won last yearâs lottery despite having just a 1.8% chance of drawing the No. 1 pick. That put them in a prime position to select Cooper Flagg.
Will the Mavericks' lottery luck carry into 2026? Below, weâll take a look at Dallas' chances at landing the No. 1 pick and where the squad landed at the end of the 2025-26 regular season.
(According to Tankathon.com, as of April 12)
Mavericks' final record: 26-56
Rank in the Western Conference: T-11th
Rank in the NBA: T-24th
Chance at the No. 1 pick: 6.7%
Chance at a top-four pick: 29.0%
Teams ahead of Dallas: Washington, Indiana, Brooklyn, Utah, and Sacramento.
(According to Tankathon.com, as of April 12)
| Rank | Team | Record | Chances at the No. 1 pick (based on current position) |
| 1 | Wizards | 17-65 | 14.0% |
| 2 | Pacers | 19-63 | 14.0% |
| 2 | Nets | 20-62 | 14.0% |
| 4 | Jazz | 22-60 | 11.5% |
| - | Kings | 22-60 | 11.5% |
| 6 | Grizzlies | 25-57 | 9.0% |
| 7 | Hawks (Pick from Pelicans) | 26-56 | 6.8% |
| - | Mavericks | 26-56 |
The Mavericks won their final game of the season and wound up in a tank-tie with the Hawks, who own the pick of the 26-56 New Orleans Pelicans. That means there will be a coin flip to decide between the two teams which one will have the 7th-best odds of winning the top pick or the 8th-best odds.
Hereâs a breakdown from our Mike Curtis from last yearâs lottery:
Fourteen ping-pong balls, numbered 1-14, are placed in a hopper, with the potential for 1,001 different four-ball draws. Each team is assigned a certain number of combinations based on their final record.
At least three four-number combinations will be drawn, slotting teams with picks Nos. 1-3 in this yearâs draft.
In the event that a team has one of its combinations drawn more than once, the balls are drawn again until three different teams have been determined.
Before 2025, the Mavericks didnât have the best luck in the NBA draft lottery. Last year marked the first time in 17 lottery appearances that Dallas drew a pick better than its odds dictated.
Hereâs a look at the history and the players Dallas has selected or traded for via the draft lottery:
2025: Cooper Flagg
2023: Dereck Lively II, from Oklahoma City in exchange for Cason Wallace
2019: No one
2018: Luka Doncic, from Atlanta in exchange for Trae Young
2017: Dennis Smith Jr. (9)
2013: Kelly Olynyk (13)
2000: Etan Thomas (12)
1998: Robert Traylor (6)
1996: Samaki Walker (9)
1995: Cherokee Parks (12)
1994: Jason Kidd (2)
1993: Jamal Mashburn (4)
1992: Jim Jackson (4)
1991: Doug Smith (6)
1990: No one (pick was traded)
1989: Randy White (8)
1986: Roy Tarpley (7, via Cleveland)
