However, itās worth noting that the Mavericks had an opportunity to complete a trade with a different organization earlier this season. According to the Stein Lineās Jake Fischer, the Portland Trail Blazers submitted a trade offer to the Mavericks for Davis, but the 2011 NBA champions rejected it.
āSources say that the Blazers also contacted Dallas during the season to gauge the Mavericksā interest in a Grant-centric package sweetened with draft capital in exchange for Anthony Davis,ā Fischer wrote Saturday.
āRather than trade for a player with 2 1/2 pricy seasons remaining on his contract at that point, Dallas shipped Davis to Washington in a deal that featured a modest return in terms of future draft picks but swiftly removed three burdensome contracts (Davis, DāAngelo Russell, and Jaden Hardy) from the Mavericksā payroll.ā
The Mavericks clearly werenāt huge fans of the haul they would have received from the Trail Blazers for Davis. Moving on from a player of Davisā caliber requires an organization to ensure that the return would be worthwhile.
Take the Lakers, for example. Los Angeles swapped Davis for a future Hall of Fame point guard in Luka Doncic last season, and itās already paying off.
While the Trail Blazers donāt possess an asset in Doncicās stratosphere, their trade offer clearly missed the mark, compelling the Mavericks to respectfully decline it.
