Max Verstappen faces a 35-kilo weight penalty for the Nürburgring 24 Hours, impacting his performance against lighter competitors. This Balance of Performance (BoP) disadvantage could significantly affect his lap times in the endurance race.
The Nurburgring 24 Hours is pretty much right around the corner, and the excitement is, honestly, smashing. But you know us, we like to talk facts and figures instead of directly fanning the flames. Although everyone is all set to watch Max Verstappen command the endurance test, he is probably going into this with a handicap.
The four-time F1 world champion is facing a brutal 35-kilo weight disadvantage against some of his lighter rivals out on the track. And you probably know it by now that in the world of endurance and GT racing, carrying that kind of extra weight is basically a death sentence for your lap times.
The penalty is entirely tied to his car. In GT3 endurance racing, organizers use a Balance of Performance (BoP) system to keep the grid competitive. Right now, that system has slapped Verstappenās Mercedes-AMG GT3 with a brutal weight disadvantage. You see, the AMG comes in at 1,355 kilograms. On track, it is 35 kilos heavier than the 720S GT3 and R8 LMS Evo II.
In a 24-hour race where every tenth of a second matters, carrying that kind of dead weight is a massive disadvantage. Now Mercedes cannot āreduceā and play around with the weight. You have to understand that the core reasoning behind the penalty slap comes from the mix-and-match nature of the race. You have a front-engine Mercedes going up against a rear-engine McLaren and a mid-engine Audi.
And in order to stop one manufacturer from completely dominating, the organizers constantly adjust the BoP. Sadly for the Dutchman, with the extra 35 kilos, the 25.3-kilometer Nordschleife is going to be a nightmare scenario. Carrying all that extra mass equals Mercedes burning through fuel much faster than its lighter rivals.
Plus, on top of that, it destroys the tires much quicker, especially through the high-speed compression zones. When you are braking from top speed into tight, punishing sections like Aremberg or the Karussell, that extra momentum pushes the car wide and overheats the brakes. Over a brutal 24-hour window, fighting physics adds up to a massive time deficit.
Maybeā¦. With the penalty in mind, Verstappen has to pretty much push the car right to the ragged edge to maintain the same pace as a lighter McLaren or Audi. Now, all of it might seem like a daunting task, but you still have to keep in mind that the F1 champ has practically lived in his simulator over the past few weeks.
Max Verstappen's weight penalty is due to the Balance of Performance (BoP) system, which has imposed a 35-kilo disadvantage on his Mercedes-AMG GT3 compared to lighter rivals.
In endurance racing, carrying an extra 35 kilos can severely hinder lap times, as every tenth of a second is crucial for performance.
The Balance of Performance (BoP) system is used in GT3 racing to ensure competitive parity among different car models by adjusting their weight and performance characteristics.
Verstappen's Mercedes-AMG GT3 is competing against lighter cars such as the McLaren 720S GT3 and Audi R8 LMS Evo II at the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

However, there is one slight problem. He also has to navigate a whole new set of headaches in the pit lane. The Nürburgring organizers recently introduced a wildly strict set of minimum pit stop times based on how many laps a car has completed. This means Max and his team cannot rely on lightning-fast pit stops to claw back the time they lose on the track due to the heavy car.
It might seem like the odds are completely stacked against him and his Mercedes, but his goal hasnāt changed at all. Max Verstappen aināt showing up to Germany just to have a fun weekend away. He is there to win, and winning is all he does. Que the Max VerstappenĀ music.
