The New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, April 18th. That loss was a close 4-2 defeat, and dropped the Mets to a 7-14 record.

It's only 21 games into the regular season, and the Mets are in desperation mode. But, even worse than this record already indicates is how the Mets got here. This Cubs loss was their 10th in a row.

As ESPN's Jeff Passan highlighted following the Mets' loss, teams that lose 10 games in a row in MLB history typically do not make the playoffs. If history repeats itself, as it often does, the Mets are going to miss the postseason for the second year in a row.

"Four teams in MLB history have lost 10 or more games in a row and made the playoffs," Passan shared. "The last was the Guardians in 2025. Only one of those teams had a skid in April and still made the postseason: the 1951 Giants, who lost 11 consecutive.. The New York Mets have lost 10 straight."

The Mets are in the middle of a major losing streak, dropping 10 straight games, only 21 games into the regular season. A few weeks ago, they were 7-4; now they're 7-14 and in danger of missing the playoffs already.

Of course, it's still incredibly early. And just last year, the Cleveland Guardians proved that losing 10 in a row isn't the end of the Mets' chances to make the postseason. But it's a huge hurdle to clear, especially with how bad the offense looks.

Things could turn around once Juan Soto comes back. But, even then, the Mets need , , and plenty of others to start turning things around this season.
