The New York Mets entered the 2026 season leading all MLB teams in payroll on Opening Day. 19 games later, they sit at the bottom of the NL East with a 7-12 record, riding an eight-game losing streak.
The Mets just wrapped up their road series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and their problems only seem to be getting larger. David Stearns' team has turned out to be a massive "disappointment" so far this season, as MLB insider Bob Nightengale rightly highlighted the miserable state of the team.
"The Mets are an absolute mess," Nightengale wrote in his USA Today column. "They have scored three runs in their last 38 innings. They went down in order 15 times in the three-game series against the Dodgers. They have already been shut out five times. They have the second-lowest batting average in the National League. And they’ve had four players who have endured hitless streaks of at least 20 at-bats."
The concerns don't just end there. Their big bucks are not producing as expected.
Mets' $341 million shortstop Francisco Lindor has once again started slow, with only one RBI to show. Third baseman Bo Bichette, who was signed to a three-year, $126 million contract in free agency this past offseason, is only hitting .228 with one home run.
Offseason trade acquisition Marcus Semien (.194 with a .526 OPS), starters David Peterson (6.41 ERA) and Kodai Senga (7.07 ERA) are not inspiring any hopes either. The Mets will need to turn things around soon, or someone could get on the firing line.
