The New York Mets might have made the most outside additions of any team from this past offseason. They added a lot of new faces to the big league roster, while letting plenty of others walk.
The roster overhaul resulted in Freddy Peralta, Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, Luis Robert Jr., Bo Bichette, Carson Benge, Jorge Polanco, and Marcus Semien joining the roster.
Tim Britton of The Athletic called out Peralta from that group of new Mets players as the "best newcomer," in a tight race, but a tight race for all the of the wrong reasons.
"Best newcomer: Freddy Peralta. For a team that added Peralta, Bo Bichette, Jorge Polanco, Luis Robert Jr., Devin Williams, and Marcus Semien, this figured to be a competitive category," Britton writes. "It is, but for the wrong reasons."

With Roberts struggles lately dropping his OPS to .737, Bichette posting a concerning .538 OPS with a .217 average, and Semien's .234 average and .606 OPS is not much.
Add in that Polanco has a .532 OPS and is on the injured list, Benge has a .435 OPS, Williams has a 7.11 ERA with a blown save that could've stopped the losing streak, and Weaver has a 6.23 ERA on the year, and the new additions all have struggled.

Peralta, who has a 4.05 ERA with a 1-2 record, is the winner of the Mets' best newcomer "by default," according to Britton.
But even Peralta has been a letdown. He was meant to be the team's ace, and yet, he's posted a 96 ERA+ through the first five starts of the season, the worst mark since the 2019 season for Peralta in his big league career, and worst as a full-time starter.
Peralta has posted 0.2 bWAR on the season, while Robert's posted 0.3 bWAR. Going by that metric, Robert should be the team's "best newcomer."
But, with how bleak this competition is for the Mets in 2026, the team's best newcomer is not one to be excited about at all, as all the prominent new faces have struggled this season.
