The New York Yankees changed their facial hair policy for Devin Williams and then watched as he became the opposite of the caliber of closer they thought they had acquired.
Williams had four blown saves and was too inconsistent in a tight postseason race, likely costing the Yankees a division title.
The right-hander signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the New York Mets during the offseason, and things haven't gone much better.
"The start of the Mets portion of Devin Williams' career has gone about as painfully as his Yankees beginning did," Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller, who ranked New York's bullpen as just the 24th best in the Majors, wrote Tuesday. "The Airbender tossed a perfect inning with a 3-0 deficit on Sunday, but had been torched for eight earned runs across his previous four appearances."
Williams' nasty changeup continues to fool batters (8 IP, 15 K), but six walks and eight hits allowed in eight innings are a sight for sore eyes.

The good news for the Mets?
"However, the rest of the bullpen—specifically Huascar Brazobán, Brooks Raley, and Tobias Myers—hasn't been too shabby, making this a rare ranking from this April in which the Mets aren't quite in the bottom five," Miller added.
For the Mets to turn their season around, Williams must be a reliable arm in save situations. In 2025, the Yankees removed him from the closer's role multiple times throughout the year.
