Though the Mets earned a 10-8 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, April 23, at Citi Field, Williams suffered an indignity that sums up his season so far.
As shared by SNY on X, Williams departed the bullpen to pitch the ninth inning with his entrance music blaring and stadium lights flashing.
There was just one problem. The Mets’ setup man, Huascar Brazoban, had already crossed the foul line to take the mound.
“Because he crossed the foul line, he has to face at least the first batter in the ninth inning,” Mets play-by-play man Gary Cohen said.
Meanwhile, Williams had to walk back to the bullpen while Brazoban warmed up.
Mets beat reporter Max Goodman shared another angle of the event.
As it turned out, Brazoban made the mistake. He said a coach told him he would remain in the game if it was still tied after the eighth inning. But the Mets took a 10-7 lead on a three-run double by Bo Bichette.

When the inning ended, Brazoban left the dugout “on autopilot.”
“Once the lights started going on and off when they changed the pitcher,” Brazobán said through an interpreter, per MLB.com, “that’s when I realized.
“I felt bad. I was also a little bit embarrassed that I didn’t fully pay attention to what was going on. Sometimes when that happens, something bad can happen. But luckily I was able to go out there, get that out, and everything kind of went the way that it should have been by the end of it.”
Indeed, in a novel turn of events for the Mets, everything worked out fine.
Brazoban, who gave up a game-tying grand slam in the eighth, retired Minnesota’s Austin Martin for the first out of the ninth. Then, Williams entered and allowed a run on three hits but closed out the victory for New York. The official scorer credited Williams with the victory.
The Mets open a weekend series with the Colorado Rockies at 7:10 p.m. ET Friday at Citi Field.
