Mets’ David Stearns pretty much took a shot at Luis Robert Jr without even realizing it originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
There's really no way to ignore the problems the New York Mets have had over the past few seasons, and this year has been just as bad as anybody could have imagined.
For the Mets, a lot of that has been their inability to stay on the field. David Stearns knew he took that risk when he made moves for some of these guys during the offseason, and it sounds like he's finally going to consider prior injuries before he makes moves.
Depending on how much he was already doing that, it's evident something has to change, and this could have been a direct shot at some of the players he made deals for this winter, especially Luis Robert Jr., who has had a long injury history.
"I think we absolutely have to look at our risk assessment on injured players or players who get injured once they're here," said Stearns, per ESPN. "Certainly, we know we're taking a level of risk when we bring players in with injury histories. We're feeling that risk right now and it hasn't helped that a number of our players have gotten hurt at the exact same time."
It's always tough when a higher-up in an organization comes out and makes comments like this, but it's almost impossible to ignore with the injuries the Mets have dealt with. I don't want to blame all of that on Stearns or even the players, but ultimately, Stearns is the one giving these guys deals. He knew when he made the trade for Robert and signed other players that they had injury histories, so we have to blame him at least a bit.
David Stearns made comments that seemed to indirectly address Luis Robert Jr.'s injury history, suggesting a need for the Mets to consider prior injuries in their player acquisitions.
Injuries have significantly impacted the Mets' performance over the past few seasons, contributing to their struggles on the field.
David Stearns may start prioritizing players' injury histories more carefully when making roster decisions to improve the team's overall health and performance.
