Mets get bad news on potential Mike Trout trade for Juan Soto reason

"I considered the Mets, but they don't seem like a great fit," Law writes. "Rookie Carson Benge has not hit so far this year, although his future is still quite promising; they really need a first baseman, which Trout hasn't played, and putting him at DH doesn't necessarily improve their offense enough right now and potentially blocks that spot for Juan Soto for several years."

The Mets have backed themselves into a corner when it comes to team-building this year. Luis Robert Jr., Soto, and Carson Benge make up the outfield, with the designated hitter spot also being filled already.

Trout would be an upgrade over Robert and Benge, but his position, whether it's in the outfield or at designated hitter, might come into conflict with Soto.

While the Mets would surely love to add someone as good as Trout to their roster, the fit doesn't exactly make the most sense.

First base is a far-larger need for this team, and instead of spending a ton of capital on Trout, who would make for a crowded outfield and pool of DH options, adding a first baseman would make more sense.

It's also worth noting that the Mets aren't exactly in the best spot with their 12-22 record, and trading for players might not be the right idea in general.

It would be a fun pickup for the Mets, as Trout is a future Hall of Famer, and getting such an incredible player in the middle of a career resurgence would be exciting for any team.

But the Mets aren't a good fit. A crowded DH room, the expensive price tag to acquire Trout, and their other need make this potentially fun trade not a realistic one for the Mets at all.
