Clay Holmes of the Mets suffered a fractured fibula after being hit by a line drive during the Subway Series. He is expected to be out for an extended period, impacting the team's pitching rotation.
NEW YORK — Clay Holmes kept pitching and that is what made Friday night's news all the more crippling for the Mets.
In the fourth inning, Holmes took a 111.1 mph line drive off his right leg. The Mets right-hander crouched behind the mound momentarily, shook it off and faced another seven Yankees batters.
But an X-ray after the game revealed the worst possible outlook. Holmes, who had been the Mets' best starter early in 2026, suffered a fractured fibula, and is "going to be down for a long time," Carlos Mendoza said after the game.

Holmes injury is the latest affliction to an already-wounded Mets roster, which is dealing with the absences of Francisco Lindor (calf), Jorge Polanco (Achilles bursitis) and Luis Robert Jr. (herniated disc in lower back).
Holmes entered the night with a 4-3 record, 1.86 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 37 strikeouts in 48⅓ innings. He was tagged for a season-high four earned runs on seven hits and two walks in a season-low 4⅓ innings on Friday night in his first matchup against his former team.
New York Mets pitcher Clay Holmes (35) talks with catcher Luis Torrens (13) after being hit by a ground ball during the fourth inning against the New York Yankees at Citi Field.
"It's tough. Clay is a guy who shows up every day. He's one of the hardest workers I've ever seen in my career," Juan Soto said. "He's working every time, every moment. If you take your eyes off, he's going to be working. It's unbelievable what he's doing, but it's really sad what happened to him. But it's part of the game.
Holmes recorded four outs on a fractured leg, working around two singles and twos walk and striking out three batters. One earned run was charged in the fifth inning after he allowed a walk that later scored.
"You can make a case that that's the hard part to understand here because he was fine, we checked him, he finished the inning," Mendoza said. "He goes back out there because he feels good and then obviously that last pitch something didn't look right and then came out, I'm talking to him in the dugout and it's like, 'Yeah, something didn't feel right.'"
Holmes was not available for comment after the game.
