New month, new Mets?
After finishing a dreadful month of April with the worst record in baseball, New York appears to have found their footing a bit over the opening week of May.
With Wednesday night’s win over the Rockies, they are now riding a three-game winning streak and have won back-to-back series for the first time all season.
While they still plenty work to do to climb out of that early-season hole, Carlos Mendoza has been encouraged by what he’s seen from the team of late.
“It’s good to see the guys out there playing loose, playing with confidence, and just playing their games -- they aren’t trying to do too much right now,” the skipper said.
“You watch the at-bats, watch them in the dugout, during the game, pregame -- they are playing the game the way they are capable of -- there’s a lot of smiles on their faces, so it’s just good to see them having fun.”
That certainly was the case on Wednesday, as the offense busted out for 10 runs on 15 hits while Freddy Peralta gutted his way through five scoreless innings on the mound.
Juan Soto set the tone with a leadoff homer three pitches in, then the bottom of the order helped add on in the middle innings, with Marcus Semien’s four hits spearheading the charge.
It was a much-needed big night for the shorthanded offense.
“You want to have good games in this ballpark,” Semien said. “It’s a good place to hit, it’s a big outfield and the ball carries -- Juan starting it off was good for everybody to feel like it was going to be a good day, and it definitely was.”
“This is what I expected, this is who we are,” Peralta added. “We have to keep it that way.”
And they’ll look to keep it that way on Thursday afternoon, as Christian Scott takes the ball with the chance to secure the teams second series sweep of the season.
The action gets underway at 3:10 p.m. on SNY.

“It’s important,” Mendoza said. “We have an opportunity to come back tomorrow and get that third one and that’s our mentality right now -- we can’t sit here and think about the past, it’s just taking it one day at a time.”
