Even if the New York Mets find a way to turn their season around, there are several players on the roster who might not last past the trade deadline.
Most of them are on expiring contracts and or don't fit the future of the organization.
FanSided's Zachary Rotman wrote on Wednesday that a 37-year-old reliever the Mets signed during spring training should have a short leash.
"Craig Kimbrel has been better than anyone could've expected this season for the Mets," Rotman wrote. "Despite diminished velocity and stuff, Kimbrel has been finding ways to get outs, allowing just three earned runs in 7.1 innings of work and posting a 1.92 FIP. While he's helped the Mets out and has earned the right to stick around, at least for now, will he?"
Kimbrel is a nine-time All-Star, but those days are far behind him. He threw just 12 Major League innings in 2025, splitting time with the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves.
With 440 career saves, Kimbrel ranks fifth on the all-time list. That alone likely won't keep him around in Queens.

"If the Mets are good, they'll need to add at least one reliever, and that'd put Kimbrel's spot in jeopardy," Rotman added. "If they're selling, why bother keeping Kimbrel, a soon-to-be 38-year-old, around, when they could give his spot to a younger reliever who has more of a future in Queens?"
By this point in his career, Kimbrel probably understands that the Mets can cut him loose any day. There are plenty of prospects/minor leaguers in the system waiting for an opportunity.
