The New York Mets have been a major disappointment thus far.
But that doesn't mean they should give up on the season just yet. There's still time for the Mets to right the ship.
That being said, there may be an urgency to sell at the deadline if things don't go New York's way. FanSided's Robert Murray lists one of the Mets' best starting pitchers as someone who could be traded.
"But if they do decide to sell, they have two of the most intriguing trade assets on the market in starters Clay Holmes and Freddy Peralta," Murray wrote. Holmes is signed through the 2027 season. That controllability, as well as his 1.86 ERA this season, would make him highly coveted."
Holmes' controllability is exactly why the Mets shouldn't trade the two-time All-Star, who became a starter with the NL East club after pitching out of the bullpen with the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees.
In all likelihood, the Mets will be looking to put a winning product on the field in 2027. Holmes should be a key piece on that roster, especially if Peralta is traded or departs in free agency.

Sure, the trade return for Holmes won't be as substantial with a half-season of control compared to one and a half, but New York's front office has to think bigger picture.
There's also the option of trading the right-hander during the offseason. We'll see where the Mets are two and a half months from now, but trading Holmes just for the sake of making a deal would be borderline useless.
Trading their All-Star pitcher could be a major mistake as he represents a key asset for the team's potential recovery this season.
The Mets have been a major disappointment, struggling to perform well and facing pressure to make decisions before the trade deadline.
While the article mentions a 'highly coveted' pitcher, it does not specify the name; however, he is recognized as a significant trade asset.
