The New York Mets are dealing with several injuries amid their rough start to the 2026 season.
Luis Robert Jr., Francisco Lindor, Ronny Mauricio, Jorge Polanco, and Jared Young are all currently on the IL.
Until those players come back, the Mets have added multiple veterans to the roster. FanSided's Zachary Rotman described one of them as a "short-term band-aid" for New York's position player mix.
"Austin Slater is in virtually the same exact boat as [Andy] Ibanez. The Mets signed him after he was DFA'd by the Miami Marlins, hoping he'd give them some thump against lefties, and to his credit, he's gone 3-for-9 with New York," Rotman wrote Wednesday.

Before signing with the Mets, Slater had already been granted his release by the Detroit Tigers and designated for assignment by the Marlins this season.
Slater has hit well against lefties in his career, as 30 of his 45 career home runs have come against southpaws. But there's little to no room on the Mets' roster when guys like Lindor and Robert are healthy.
"Unfortunately, he's here as a reinforcement with all of the injuries the Mets are dealing with, and while he's had a decent week with the Mets, he wasn't hitting with Miami, and didn't have a great year in 2025 either," Rotman added. "Slater is a short-term band-aid, and once the Mets are healthier, he's likely going to be replaced."
The Mets are Slater's seventh organization since the start of 2024.
