Mexico is getting a jump-start on World Cup preparation, naming a dozen Liga MX-based players to a camp that begins May 6 and will continue through the start of the tournament.
While Mexico manager Javier Aguirre won't be required to name the players on his final roster, due to FIFA at the end of May, the players on this list are expected to be part of the final roster - especially after Liga MX clubs pushed to receive that guarantee before releasing their players for the postseason.
Five Chivas players, including standout forward Armando "Hormiga" Gonzalez and Illinois-born attacker Brian Gutierrez, are included on the list. So, too, is teenage sensation Gilberto Mora, who missed much of the Liga MX season recovering from a sports hernia.
This is a special tournament for El Tri, with veteran manager Aguirre regularly underlining the unique nature of playing a World Cup at home. Mexico plays its entire group stage in its home country and if it tops Group A would also play its Round of 32 contest in Mexico City with the winner of that game staying in the capital city for the Round of 16.
With that in mind, Liga MX club owners agreed to release their players to Aguirre before the league's postseason for a training camp set to begin May 6.
Spain – 17th appearance

This World Cup is special for Mexico as they will play their entire group stage at home, with potential for further matches in Mexico City.
Liga MX clubs agreed to release their players to ensure they could participate in the training camp before the league's postseason.

This seems to mean the end of the World Cup hope for several players who looked to have their places set. Toluca midfielder Marcel Ruiz, who suffered an ACL tear that he was pushing through in hopes of making the final roster, is not on the list. Nor is his club teammate, center back Everardo Lopez.
Many also expected Richard Ledezma, a Phoenix-born wingback for Chivas, to be included after he made his Mexico debut this year and impressed as a fullback option. But the 25-year-old is not on the list.
Cruz Azul midfielder Charly Rodriguez consistently received criticism from fans but seemed to have won Aguirre's confidence. He, too, is absent from the list.
Additionally, eight young players who may be included in the 2030 World Cup cycle led by Rafa Marquez have been called into the camp to help with training and give them experience.
Those players are León goalkeeper Oscar Garcia, Puebla defender Luis Rey Mejia, Atletico San Luis defender Eduardo Aguila, Juarez fullback Denzell García, Monterrey midfielder Iker Fimbres, FC Juarez midfielder Jairo Torres and Tijuana attacker Kevin Castaneda.
The roster will be supplemented by Mexico's Europe-based players, with Fulham forward Raul Jimenez and center-back pairing Johan Vasquez of Genoa and Cesar Montes of Lokomotiv Moscow among the notable names who are expected to be added. Alvaro Fidalgo, a former América midfielder who was naturalized after many years in the country but now plays for Real Betis, also looks set to claim a roster spot after a promising El Tri debut in March.
There is less certainty about midfielder Edson Alvarez. Often Mexico's captain, Alvarez is fighting a knee injury suffered with Fenerbahçe and hasn't played since February. And while Obed Vargas continues to get minutes from Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid, an interview Aguirre made in which he implied he wouldn't have called the Alaska-born midfielder for the World Cup before he made that transfer has raised doubts that he will include the 20-year-old in the final squad.
There also are questions about which center forwards Aguirre will call to join Gonzalez and Jimenez. Santi Gimenez seemed to be a sure thing after his move to AC Milan but is yet to score this season after returning from an injury absence. Inter Miami forward German Berterame has struggled to score since his move from Monterrey but will also contend for a place in the team.
The final roster will be announced June 1.
