Michael Kay criticizes the Yankees for their handling of young player Ben Rice, pointing out a contradiction in manager Aaron Boone's statements about Rice not being a platoon player. Kay highlights that Rice's lack of starts against left-handed pitchers suggests otherwise.

Thereâs a fascinating contradiction brewing in the Bronx, and Michael Kay isnât letting it slide.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone says Ben Rice isnât a platoon player. When asked by reporters, his response? âHell no.â
But hereâs the problem: when Rice sits in four out of five games against left-handed starters, it screams platoon.
âIs Rice a platoon player? And excuse my language, but Boone says, âHell no.â But when he doesnât start in four or five games against a lefthander, it kind of screams out platoon,â Kay said on his ESPN New York show on Wednesday, via YouTube.
The Yankees re-signed Paul Goldschmidt, a veteran slugger with elite credentials against left-handed pitching.
Heâs a clubhouse asset. Everybody loves the guy. He wanted to be in New York. The problem? He can only play one positionâfirst base.
And Ben Rice, the Yankeesâ starting first baseman, is currently one of their most productive hitters.
âSince he can only play one position, heâs going to replace Rice against left-handed pitching. So even though youâll deploy Rice off the bench later in the game when they go to a right-hander in the bullpen, youâre taking at bats away from one of the best hitters in your lineup,â Kay explained.
The Yankees have faced five left-handed starters this season. Rice has sat in four of those games.

Booneâs counter-argument is that Rice becomes a âweapon off the benchâ â but as Kay points out, you could say the same thing about Aaron Judge.
Would you bench Judge for four plate appearances just to use him as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning?
Of course not. Your best players should play.
âIf youâre using him in the fifth, thatâs two bats he didnât get at the beginning of the game. Youâre using him in the eighth, thatâs three to four at bats that youâve left in the dugout with him,â Kay said. âI donât know how you solve this problem.â
Kay doesnât sugarcoat the dilemma Boone faces.
Goldschmidt is on the roster. He needs to playâor he becomes a non-person. He canât pinch-run. He canât play another position. Heâs not an elite hitter against righties.
So if you donât start him against lefties, his value plummets.
But the flip side is just as problematic: Rice is young. Heâs got a future in the Bronx. And if youâre not giving him 500-plus at-bats, youâre stunting his development.
One solution Kay floated: get Rice ready to catch. If Rice can back up Austin Wells, suddenly both Goldschmidt and Rice can be in the lineup against lefties.
Rice catches, Goldschmidt plays first. When a right-hander comes in, Wells pinch-hits and Rice moves back to first base.
But Boone shut that down, saying Rice âisnât readyâ to catch at the big-league level yet.
So whatâs the answer? Kay thinks you have to prioritize Rice. Start him every day. Use Goldschmidt strategicallyâas a pinch-hitter against tough lefty relievers.
âI think youâve got to go with Rice and use Goldschmidt as a pinch hitter against a tough lefty reliever,â Kay said.
