Former Manchester United star Michael Owen has urged the club to bring back Rasmus Hojlund, arguing that the striker was not given a fair chance at the club.
Hojlund struggled to have an impact at United following his big-money move from Atalanta in the summer of 2023.
Burdened with the responsibility of leading the line for United, he struggled under the weight of expectations. His measly four Premier League goals last season proved to be the breaking point for United, who made the decision to offload him in the summer.
United sanctioned a loan exit to Napoli, who are obligated to make the signing permanent upon securing Champions League football. Napoli have already made it known that they want to keep Hojlund beyond the end of the campaign.
The Dane has enjoyed a slight uptick in fortunes in Italy. He has made 29 Serie A appearances this term, contributing 10 goals and four assists.
Despite the improvement, there has been very little to suggest that United would be keen on having Hojlund back at the club ahead of next season. However, Owen has insisted that this is a course of action the club should look to explore.
Speaking after Unitedâs 2-1 win over Brentford, Owen claimed that is evidence enough of what can happen once a young striker is in the right environment. Sesko scored Unitedâs second goal of the evening.

Owen said on Premier League Productions, âI donât care who you play up front, itâs very hard to judge when the team arenât functioning.â
âStrikers are the end of the chain. If the chain is broken, itâs pointless in many ways. I would love to see Hojlund and see what he can do now. He played in a Manchester United team that was broken and didnât have any links and played poorly. Whoâs to say heâs not really good? Heâs doing really well in Italy now.â
âSesko is the same, it was hard to judge but now that chain throughout the team is actually working, you are seeing a different type of player.â
The former Liverpool and United man added, âI just wonder how much wastage there has been for many years in.â
âEveryone says the purchases have been poor and that might be the case but sometimes they might not get a fair crack of the whip because they donât get the service.â
United are next in action on Sunday when they host Liverpool. A win would mathematically secure Champions League football for Carrick and his players.
