Michigan football has missed out on five-star recruit Marcus Fakatou for the 2027 class, as he confirmed the Wolverines are not in his top five choices. Despite this setback, there remains a possibility for Michigan to secure a five-star recruit in the cycle.

Michigan football has been in on very few, if any, five-star recruits in the 2027 cycle since Kyle Whittingham took over the program. While the former Utah head coach is grinding on the recruiting trail, not many of those creme de la creme-level players have seemed to give the Wolverines a look.
But there was one, and now, it appears that the maize and blue have been eliminated.
2027 Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon (the same high school as basketball signee Brandon McCoy) five-star Marcus Fakatou visited Ann Arbor three times on record -- twice under the old regime and once under Whittingham. And, for a time, it had appeared that Michigan may have had the lead for him. However, on Monday, he dropped his top five and confirmed that it was correct: the Wolverines are not on it.
It's not a sure thing that Michigan comes away with a five-star this cycle, but it's also not impossible. After all, one of the already committed four-stars (like quarterback Kamden Lopati, who will be appearing in the Elite 11) could see a massive bump as scouting continues. Such could also be the case if Michigan were able to improve its standing with in-state star WR Dakota Guerrant, who was once a five-star. Or, the Wolverines could get into the mix with someone late. But as of now, there aren't any obvious five-stars that the maize and blue are trending for.

The specific top contenders for Marcus Fakatou have not been disclosed, but he has eliminated Michigan from his list.
Yes, Michigan football could still secure a five-star recruit in the 2027 class, especially if current four-star commitments improve their rankings or if they target late recruits.
