Ishpeming's Jenessa Eagle, a senior guard, led her team to a Division 4 state championship victory over Portland St. Patrick with a 48-28 score. Eagle has signed with Michigan Tech University to continue her basketball career.
While she had been an all-state caliber guard much of her career, Jenessa Eagle wasn't the same kind of household name in Michigan girls high school basketball as downstate 2026 classmates.
But, that sure did change for the Ishpeming senior.
While it can be hard to stand out and make headlines from the Upper Peninsula, Eagle and her Hematite teammates made sure the whole state was aware when things were all said and done.
Ishpeming put on a dominant run to the Division 4 state championship and Breslin Center, where they capped the season on a 20-point victory, 48-28, over Portland St. Patrick.
Eagle, signed with Michigan Tech University to continue her basketball career, led the Hematite's all the way.
Ishpeming's Jenessa Eagle shoots against Portland St. Patrick during the fourth quarter in the Division 4 girls basketball state final on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.
Now, she's recognized by the Michigan Sports Writers as the Division 4 girls basketball player of the year, announced Monday, April 13.
Eagle averaged 24.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists as a 5-foot-9 guard. She was joined in receiving all-state honors with her coach, Ryan Reichel, being named the Division 4 coach of the year.
Teammate Mya Hemmer was also named to the Division 4 first team.
