The Big House is among the most legendary cathedrals of college football, perhaps not the rowdiest or most ornate, but it truly is the most prolific.
Boasting the largest seating capacity of any (non-racing) venue in North America, there's rarely more people watching a football game anywhere in America on any game day in Ann Arbor. And such has been the case for some time.
Wednesday marks not exactly Michigan Stadium's birthday, but 100 years since it went from conception to commission. And with that benchmark, Michigan has revealed that it plans to spend the year celebrating the iconic stadium throughout the year.

Here is the full release from the Michigan football program.
On April 22, 1926, one hundred years ago today, the University of Michigan Board of Regents gave then-athletic director and head football coach Fielding H. Yost permission to proceed with construction of the famed Michigan Stadium. Over the course of its lifetime, the stadium has witnessed some of college football's greatest moments and has hosted some historic events at the largest venue in North America and the third-largest in the world.
Michigan Athletics will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Michigan Stadium throughout the summer and fall of 2027, highlighting a year-long celebration of the stadium. Michigan Stadium opened on Oct. 1, 1927, against Ohio Wesleyan (33-0 victory) and was officially dedicated on Oct. 22, 1927, against Ohio State (21-0 victory). Those are two of several anniversary dates Michigan Athletics will honor next year.
A logo honoring the 100 years of Michigan Stadium has been designed to commemorate the milestone anniversary. Michigan will honor Michigan Stadium in several ways during the 2027 season, including in-game features, special events, commemorative merchandise, as well as digital content for MGoBlue.com and the department's social media channels.
Coined "The Big House" by legendary ABC Sports broadcaster Keith Jackson, Michigan Stadium is the largest college-owned structure of its kind designed solely for football. The facility was opened in 1927, and the capacity has been altered 10 times to its current capacity of 107,601. Michigan has led the nation in attendance in 48 of the past 51 seasons and has drawn more than 100,000-plus fans for 329 straight home football games. The program set the NCAA single-game attendance record of 115,109 fans during its 2013-night game against Notre Dame.
In addition to college football, Michigan Stadium has played host to The Big Chill at the Big House college hockey game (2010, Michigan and Michigan State), the NHL Winter Classic (2014, Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs) and four International Champions Cup Soccer matches – Real Madrid and Manchester United (2014), Chelsea and Real Madrid (2016), Liverpool and Manchester United (2018) and Barcelona and Napoli (2019).
On Sept. 27, 2025, the venue hosted its first-ever concert as Zach Bryan performed the largest ticketed concert in U.S. history with 112,408 attendees. Morgan Wallen will play two shows (July 24-25) in the summer of 2026.
The 2026 season will mark the 99th season of competition at Michigan Stadium for the 12-time national champions and the winningest football program in college football history.
