Mike McCarthy is not pretending Aaron Rodgersâ absence is ideal, but he does see a practical upside in it.
With the Pittsburgh Steelers still waiting on a final decision from the veteran quarterback, the team has had no choice but to move forward with the players already in the building.
That uncertainty has created obvious questions, yet it has also opened the door for valuable development at the most important position on the field.

McCarthyâs statement shared via Brooke Pryor on X, he explained why Rodgersâ absence is not entirely a negative.
âI think Aaron is probably more in tune than we would realize, but I have confidence in where he would be the day he would arrive, if thatâs his decision,â McCarthy said.
He added, âBut what Iâve learned through instituting an off-season program, there are benefits of periods where your veterans arenât here. And weâre talking about the quarterback position.â
The message was clear. McCarthy trusts Rodgersâ ability to step back in, but he also knows these early reps matter more for the quarterbacks still trying to establish themselves.

That is what makes the current stretch useful rather than purely frustrating.
For now, Pittsburgh is still operating without a final answer from Rodgers and the Steelers do not expect a decision before the draft, with the timeline potentially stretching into May or even June.
That delay has allowed Will Howard and Mason Rudolph to split the first-team work through the opening days of the offseason program, giving the coaching staff an extended look at both quarterbacks.
âSo this is very beneficial time for Will and Mason right now. They split all the reps today in the last two days and thatâs just great work. And when you see it improve from one day to the next, thatâs what youâre looking for,â he continued.
âSo all those things factor, but Iâm comfortable where we are, and weâre giving him the space to make his decision,â McCarthy concluded.
McCarthy has worked with Rodgers before and appears confident the veteran can handle the system without needing every offseason rep, while younger quarterbacks need those snaps far more.
In the meantime, Pittsburgh gets a clearer read on Howardâs growth and Rudolphâs steadiness while keeping the door open for Rodgers to return on his own timeline.
Until that decision comes, the Steelersâ approach appears simple. Stay patient, keep developing the room, and avoid letting uncertainty stall the rest of the offseason.
