Mike McDaniel identifies Justin Herbert’s key to play his best football yet

The NFL has entered the minicamp phase of the offseason, with training camps just around the corner. Teams have spent the past few months navigating free agency and the draft while building toward the 2026 season.

The Los Angeles Chargers have not only made several key additions through free agency and the draft, but they are also set to welcome back their starting offensive tackles. After quarterback Justin Herbert spent much of the 2025 season under constant pressure, the Chargers responded by making a change at offensive coordinator.

Mike McDaniel was hired shortly after departing the Miami Dolphins. His mission is clear: maximize Herbert’s potential and elevate the offense. McDaniel already understands what Herbert needs to take the next step in his development.

Last season, Herbert often had to rely on his athleticism to extend plays and create opportunities outside the pocket. McDaniel acknowledged that ability in an interview with ESPN, calling Herbert an incredible athlete who “extends plays and launches it down the field.”

Getting the most out of Herbert

So how do the Chargers plan to keep Herbert healthy while helping him reach another level? McDaniel offered a simple answer: “Max out those quick throws.”

He also emphasized that forcing Herbert to play Superman will not improve the offense. The Chargers intend to change that approach this season.

McDaniel added that improvements in Herbert’s footwork, timing, and anticipation will ultimately unlock another level in his game. His offensive system is designed to put Herbert in the best possible position to succeed.
