Milan Gaffer Allegri Lingering as a Candidate for Italy
The recent results by Milan are raising further questions about the future of Massimiliano Allegri. The Rossoneri saw their lead over Juventus, Como, and Roma significantly shrink as of late.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the ownership could wipe the slate clean should they miss out on a top-four finish. Regardless, the fences will have to be mended between the most influential part of the front office: CEO Giorgio Furlani and consultant Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the coach, who doesn’t feel he’s been supported enough this campaign, and director Igli Tare, who could get caught in the middle.
The parties haven’t been on great terms for a while, but the new element is that Allegri would be a serious candidate for the Italy job if he left Milan. He’d have to step down and wait, as the Federation will elect its new president only in June. The same goes for Antonio Conte. Napoli governor Aurelio De Laurentiis asked his gaffer to let him know in advance.
The Rossoneri higher-ups have started inquiring about possible replacements, like Bologna coach Vincenzo Italiano and Atalanta exec Toni D’Amico. Per La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Tuscan boss would gladly continue at San Siro. However, he’ll demand significant reinforcements to compete for the Scudetto. It’s not certain his vision will be embraced.
Allegri's position is uncertain due to Milan's recent poor results, which have diminished their standing in the league.
The key figures include CEO Giorgio Furlani, consultant Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and director Igli Tare, who have had ongoing disagreements.
The new president of the Italian Football Federation will be elected in June, which impacts Allegri's potential candidacy for the national team.

It’ll be stunning if they fell out, but they’re in the worst form among the four contenders for two spots. The national team shouldn’t be anybody’s sloppy second or used for leverage. It’s unclear who’s really calling the shots within the Rossoneri, or perhaps their owner can be easily influenced by who’s the loudest, which isn’t a great way to run a team.
