Milligan Buffaloes Ready for National Stage at the NAIA Tournament
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) – The No. 11 Milligan Buffaloes are preparing for another shot at history as the Buffs head to Lakeland, FL for the opening round of the NAIA Baseball National Championship.
Milligan earned an at-large bid into the tournament field and enters the regional as a No. 2 seed in a double-elimination bracket. The Buffs will open play Monday against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
A trip to the regional round already marks another milestone season for the program, but the Buffs say their focus is on taking the next step and reaching the NAIA World Series in Lewiston for the first time in program history.
“It would mean everything,” third baseman Gaven Jones said. “Just having been here for five years and the time and the effort…seeing all the guys who come through here, I think it would mean a lot to all the guys I used to play with from over the five years, all the alumni, and the university as a whole. I think it’s just something that’s bigger than ourselves.”
Senior pitcher Canyon Green said the opportunity to make program history has added even more motivation heading into postseason play.
“It’s never been done before,” Green said. “We’ve never even advanced to the World Series in program history. So, for that to happen, it would just be the greatest baseball moment of my life.”
Head coach Skyler Barnett said the tournament run is another opportunity for the Buffs to prove they can compete on the national stage.
“It would mean so much, just as far as putting our name on the national level and being able to say that we can compete at a high level,” Barnett said. “I think that’s our goal here as a coaching staff, it’s to compete at the highest level possible.”
