Nick Singleton, a standout running back from Penn State, is projected to be drafted by the New York Jets in the third round. Despite an injury during the Senior Bowl, his impressive workouts have kept him in the mix for a Day 3 pick.
For Nick Singleton, the end of his collegiate career may not have gone as expected. While the Nittany Lions failed to reach the CFP in his final year however, Singleton did manage to break two records formerly held by Penn State legend Saquon Barkley: most rushing touchdowns in a career and most all-purpose yards as well. While he suffered a broken foot during the Senior Bowl, leaving many to question how he would progress, he has looked very strong in the workouts leading up to the draft. Now, according to the Athletic, he could be rewarded for his work with a Day 3 pick.
The Athletic's Daniel Brugler recently did a seven round mock draft and he chose to mock Singleton in the third round to the New York Jets, a team that certainly could use more depth at the running back position. What with the uncertainty surrounding Breece Hall's future with the team, Singleton could get the opportunity right away to record some significant snaps.
While some teams will take into account Singleton's overall dip in form, he still offers that unique blend of size and speed you would like to see in a running back. He also displays an elite pass catching ability, something that Hall has struggled with throughout his pro career. With 987 receiving yards in Happy Valley, Singleton can provide that spark to the Jets' backfield as well.
Most importantly though, his adaptability shone through in his final season. Even when fellow running back Kaytron Allen assumed a bigger role, Singleton was able to assume more red zone carries and finish off drives. If Hall ends up staying, he could received a large share of the midfield carries, while Singleton will look to get more goal line touches.
Overall, Singleton could prove to be a sneaky pickup for any team in the later rounds of the draft. After all, he is one of Penn State's most prolific running backs in program history and has a lot to prove in the NFL. Chances are no matter who gets him, he will leave a similar impact on that team as he did with the Blue and White.
