One of the current trainers, Bob Baffert has emerged as one of the sport’s most successful figures at the Kentucky Derby. Baffert is tied for the most wins by a trainer at Churchill Downs, and he stands one elusive victory away from breaking the all-time record.
In 2015, Baffert became the first trainer to win four Kentucky Derbies since D. Wayne Lukas in 1999. His 2020 win with Justify matched him with horse racing icon Ben Jones as the only trainers with six victories in “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports."

As of 2026, Baffert and Jones are tied for the most Kentucky Derby victories, with six each. Buffert's latest came in 2018, with Justify. Baffert's Triple Crown in 2015 with American Pharaoh was the first in 37 years.
Jones' Kentucky Derby wins all came before 1953. Prior to Baffert's emergence onto the horse racing scene, Jones was seen as one of the greatest horse trainers due to his six Churchill Downs wins. Now, Baffert stands one win away from sole possession of the record.

Thompson became the first trainer to win three races at Churchill Downs. Just one year after his third victory, he won his fourth and was an early record holder for the most wins at the Kentucky Derby. Thompson gained the nickname "Derby Dick" for his frequent wins at Churchill Downs.
Fitzsimmons was the second trainer to win three Kentucky Derbies, just seven years after Thompson became the first to do so. Fitzsimmons, also known as “Sunny Jim,” began his racing career as a jockey when he was only 15 years old. After failing to gain wins as a jockey, he eventually moved towards training horses and found more success.
Hirsch's start to horse racing began at 12 years old, after sneaking onto a train from Texas to Maryland, according to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. John A. Morris, a horse rancher, was sending several racehorses to Baltimore, and Hirsch began to work under him. He became a jockey at just 13 years old, and later began his trainer career seven years later.
