BOSTON -- The Philadelphia 76ers walked out of TD Garden with a stunning 109-100 win in Game 7 to complete a 3-1 comeback over the Boston Celtics. The Sixers received big performances from their stars, but once again, the rookie made a huge difference in a playoff game.
VJ Edgecombe had 23 points on 8-for-17 shooting, 5-for-11 from deep, six rebounds, and four assists. The No. 3 overall pick was fantastic in a winner-take-all situation as he has been impressive in so many areas, but if one has watched the Sixers all season long, this is nothing new.
Edgecombe has been contributing at this high a level all season, and it has carried over into the playoffs. Even when things weren't going his way against the Celtics in terms of his shot, he never lost confidence in it.
"He got up 11 3s," said Tyrese Maxey. "So, let's just start with that. That's somebody who's shooting the ball with confidence. He didn't really shoot the ball great this entire series, but to come into Game 7 and shoot 11 3s. He shot the ball every time he was open. That's special, because people get gun-shy and they stop shooting. He didn't stop shooting."
While the shooting was, obviously, important, there was one area of his game that impressed coach Nick Nurse. Celtics guard Derrick White had 19 points at halftime as he stepped up in a big way for Boston, but Edgecombe wanted the challenge of slowing him down.
"I mean, obviously, he was great," Nurse said. "I think they did a lot of helping off of him. So, he was going to get some opportunities and to step in there and hit all hit those, you know, 5-for-11, that's amazing, but most importantly, he kind of came out of the halftime saying, 'I got White, and I'm gonna do better on him', because White was cooking. I don't remember exactly. I think White might have two points in the third quarter, something like that, and a lot of that was VJ."
VJ Edgecombe scored 23 points, shooting 8-for-17 overall and 5-for-11 from three-point range, along with six rebounds and four assists.
The Sixers won Game 7 by executing a strong performance, highlighted by VJ Edgecombe's contributions and overcoming a 3-1 series deficit.
Tyrese Maxey praised Edgecombe for his confidence, noting that he took 11 three-point shots in Game 7 despite not shooting well earlier in the series.
Edgecombe's performance underscores his crucial role in the playoffs, demonstrating his ability to deliver under pressure as a rookie.

To Nurse's point, White only had seven points after halftime after the hot start. Edgecombe played a huge role in that and his two other star teammates gave their thoughts on the rookie.
"VJ is great. He doesn't always get the ball, especially when everybody's available, but he's always willing to do whatever it takes to win. I mean, he was big for us, especially starting the game. I've been on him about shooting, about having that confidence. Tonight, he had that, and then obviously, defensively, Derrick White had it going in the first half, and taking on that challenge of understanding that that's a guy that has it going, and wanting to challenge. I mean, that's, I know he’s a rookie, but his mind is so much ahead than what he is."
"He’s special, and he's been special and he's showed it since day one, game one. Like I said, way back when we started this series about his start point, where he's at now. He hit the ground running this year. It's a good thing when the veteran guys expect so much out of the rookie. You can't even say young guy—the rook. It just says a lot, and throughout the game, he's young. It's his first experience in the playoffs, and I think the most important thing is he's young. Like I said, he's gonna make some mistakes, but he just comes back and he's ready, and he just makes the game, he makes those adjustments, and he picks up where he left off, and when he does make a mistake, he makes 10 plays that kind of counter the mistake. So, he’s very coachable game, and he's just learning. Just getting better."
"I told you guys this time and time before, VJ plays like he's not a rookie. I tend to forget sometimes, too. His confidence and his poise and the way that he has the ability to shift gears and pay attention to details, too. So it's very rare for a rookie to be as solid as him. So I'm very, very happy to have him here."
