Devin Booker visited Roden Crater, a dormant volcano and art installation by James Turrell, describing the experience as life-changing and otherworldly. He expressed a profound emotional response, likening it to a portal to another dimension.
After 30 minutes of winding through the desert, the Phoenix Suns All-Star saw a large bump in the terrain off in the distance. Surrounded by stunning mountains, Booker’s destination was a dormant volcano where he would go on a journey that would change his life. As the gates opened, Booker hopped out of his vehicle and began to march up a 100-yard tunnel into the bearded man’s magnum opus. That is where 82-year-old renowned artist James Turrell welcomed him to Roden Crater. “My hair is sticking up on my arm just remembering every time I’ve been there,” Booker tells The Athletic. “I don’t know if you’ve ever felt like you were going to a different dimension, but it’s like a portal that you’re walking toward and no matter how close you get — I want to say heaven’s on the other side — but it feels like you’re going somewhere.”
