Napoli 0-2 Lazio: Sarri’s Men Dethrone the Champions

Danilo Cataldi also returned to the lineup, playing as a Regista between Toma Basic and Kenneth Taylor. Finally, Tijjani Noslin led the line, flanked by Matteo Cancellieri and Mattia Zaccagni.

Lazio Take Early Lead

It only took Lazio six minutes to break the deadlock, much to the dismay of the home crowd. Zaccagni picked up Taylor’s run to the box and fed him with a sublime through ball. The Dutch midfielder reached the byline before cutting it back to Cancellieri, who comfortably slotted it home from the edge of the six-yard box.

The Biancocelesti remained the dangerous side, and almost added a second through a lovely curler from Basic, but Vanja Milinkovic-Savic was able to gather.

Mattia Zaccagni Wastes a Spot-Kick

In the middle of the first half, Lazio were awarded a penalty thanks to a fabulous solo effort from Noslin. The striker blocked Alessandro Buongiorno’s pass in the middle of the park and ran towards Napoli’s post. He dribbled past Sam Beukema to find himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but was brought down by Lobotka before he could aim at goal.

Zaccagni stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Milinkovic-Savic guessed it right. The Lazio captain then tried to capitalize on the rebound, but he was too outstretched to hit the target, instead denying Cancellieri the opportunity to score an easy second goal.

Toma Basic Doubles Lazio’s Lead

After the break, Lazio continued to cause their hosts problems in transitions, and their efforts were rewarded with a second goal in the 57th minute. Noslin once again left Buongiorno in the dust in midfield, creating acres of space at the back.

Tavares then played a square ball to Cancellieri, but the winger couldn’t connect well. Nevertheless, Basic was in the right place at the right time to pounce on the loose ball. Milinkovic-Savic put a hand to the Croatian’s shot, but the power took it past him.

After the second goal, Tavares almost made it 3-0, but couldn’t hit the target from close range while being deranged by Miguel Gutierrez. At the end of the pitch, Alisson Santos was behind Napoli’s most dangerous opportunity of the match, hitting the outside of the post.

Lazio will thus end the weekend in 9th place in the table, but they have become the first team to beat Napoli at the Maradona in Serie A this season. For their part, the Partenopei now find themselves trailing Inter Milan by 12 points in the table, putting the Nerazzurri one step away from being crowned the Italian champions.
