NBA fans were left doing a double-take after a LeBron James broke an NJCAA javelin record in New Mexico.
The name immediately created confusion because most sports fans connect LeBron James with the Los Angeles Lakers star.
But this was not that LeBron. The record belonged to a different athlete with the same famous name, and that made the moment go viral beyond track and field.

As Track Gazette reported, LeBron James broke the NJCAA menâs javelin record with a huge throw in New Mexico.
âLeBron James breaks the NJCAA Record in the menâs Javelin Throw with a 77.91m heave in New Mexico! He broke the record of 76.29m set by Markim Felix in 2018 to win the NJCAA title,â the tweet revealed.
The athlete is a sophomore javelin thrower at New Mexico Junior College, not the Lakers superstar.
He is from Trinidad and Tobago and has built a strong junior college track career, including back-to-back NJCAA javelin titles.
The shared name is what turned a track record into a viral basketball-adjacent story. A 77.91m throw would be impressive on its own, but attaching the name LeBron James made fans stop and check twice.
The LeBron James who broke the NJCAA javelin record is a different athlete, not the NBA star.
He set a new NJCAA javelin record in New Mexico, although the specific distance is not mentioned.
NBA fans were confused because they associated the name LeBron James with the famous basketball player from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Once fans realized this was not the Lakersâ LeBron James, the jokes came fast. One fan wrote, âNgl, the name LeBron should be limited to just one person.â Another leaned into the confusion, asking, âIs there nothing LeBron canât do?â
The timing also made fans laugh because the NBA star has been around long enough for younger athletes to share his name while he is still playing. One fan wrote, âLeBron has been around so long that weâre going to see people with his name while heâs still in the league.â
Others kept the joke going as if the Lakers forward had added another sport to his rĂ©sumĂ©. One fan said, âSave some records for the rest of the athletes, damn.â Another summed up the reaction perfectly, writing, âI had to double-check, heâs real.â
That is why the story traveled so widely. It was a real NJCAA record, set by a real javelin standout, but the name made everyone think of one of basketballâs most famous athletes first.
