Nelson was one of the most reliable setup men of the late-1990s Yankees dynasty. Acquired from Seattle in December 1995 alongside Tino Martinez, the 6-foot-8 right-hander quickly became a high-leverage weapon out of the bullpen during his two stints with the club â 1996 to 2000 and briefly in 2003.
Nelson earned rings in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 â helping anchor a bullpen that bridged the gap to Mariano Rivera during one of the most dominant stretches in franchise history.
Nelson was formidable in the postseason â he appeared in 55 career playoff games (fourth all-time at the time of his retirement), compiling a 2.65 ERA with 62 strikeouts across 54.1 innings, much of it during the Yankeesâ championship runs of the late 1990s.
