Alabama softball is having a strong season, currently holding a 44-6 record and vying for a top seed in the NCAA tournament. They trail only Oklahoma in the SEC standings as they approach postseason play.
NCAA Softball bracketology: Alabama, SEC rivals eyeing top seeds
Alabama softball has one of its best teams in years as the Crimson Tide barrel toward postseason play.
Entering the final weekend of the regular season, Alabama (44-6 overall, 16-5 conference) trails only the perennial powerhouse Oklahoma Sooners (46-6, 18-3) in the SEC standings. The Crimson Tide are tied with the Florida Gators (46-7, 16-5) behind Oklahoma in the standings.
The Sooners are No. 1 across the major softball polls and national rankings this week while Alabama is ranked No. 3 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, as well as this week's Softball America top 25.
Oklahoma is the top-hitting team in the nation with a .401 batting average through 52 games. With freshman Kendall Wells' 36 home runs leading the country, the Sooners lead Division I softball with 169 homers and 551 runs scored. Alabama ranks 32nd nationally in batting average with a .333 clip. The Tide are 31st in runs scored (335).
In the circle, Alabama's 1.62 ERA behind the 1-2 punch of starters Jocelyn Briski (19-2, 1.50) and freshman Vic Moten (16-4, 1.72) is second nationally behind Tennessee's 1.31 mark.
While there's an outside shot Alabama could pass Oklahoma in the SEC standings, it will require some work. The Tide would need to sweep a top-25 South Carolina team in Tuscaloosa and get help from Texas A&M when the Aggies host the Sooners in the regular-season finales for both teams beginning Thursday.
Alabama softball has a current record of 44-6 overall and 16-5 in the conference.
The Oklahoma Sooners lead the SEC standings with a record of 46-6 and 18-3 in the conference.
Alabama is ranked No. 3 in both the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll and the Softball America top 25.
