Injuries could ignite a different path for a top Boston Red Sox pitching prospect.

Juan Valera underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday after leaving his third start of the 2026 campaign with elbow inflammation. The 19-year-old amassed 17 strikeouts over 9 1/3 innings at High-A Greenville before suffering the season-ending setback.

On the same day of his procedure, MLB.com scouts Sam Dykstra, Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo identified Valera as a potential future closer in Boston's farm system.

"Valera has the closer's starter set with a fastball that operates at 96-98 mph and touches 100 with natural cutting action and a upper-80s slider that reaches 93 mph with two-plane depth at its best," the MLB.com article read. "He also has had difficulty staying healthy as a starter, missing three months last year with elbow soreness and making just three High-A appearances in 2026 before more elbow woes prompted Tommy John surgery in May."

Valera has flashed considerable promise since the Red Sox signed him for $45,000 as an international free agent in 2023. Yet injuries have limited him to just 138 professional innings.

MLB.com ranks Valera as Boston's No. 4 prospect, and he pairs his heater and slider with a 50-grade changeup that could give him a starter's arsenal. However, health concerns may prompt the organization to envision a future in the bullpen.

A relief role could expedite Valera's path to the majors with a successful return from surgery and help him stay on the mound.
