Kelly earned his enduring nickname “Cannonball” on BMX dirt tracks starting at age three, when his father Mark first set him on a bike in South Jordan,
Utah. Known for his explosive, all-out charges through jumps and turns, Kelly dominated youth racing, winning a national championship at age five and multiple Grands along with NAG #1 plates. That intense individual training built the same discipline and closing speed he later applied to football.
One childhood rival even indirectly connected to his initial college recruiting path through family ties to a coach. Coaches and teammates still invoke “Cannonball” to describe his hard-charging, fearless approach on the field.
Though highly recruited out of Kearns High School by programs including Utah State, Air Force, New Mexico, Army, Nevada, and Montana State, Kelly began his collegiate career at Weber State.
In 2024, he transferred to BYU, reuniting with former coach Jay Hill. The move proved transformative. Kelly has called BYU a life-changing place, saying he wished he could have attended there all four years because of the people, culture, and environment that elevated both his game and personal growth. He eventually became a team co-captain and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors.
Despite not being overly vocal, Kelly is respected for his high football IQ, versatility, and ability to lead through consistent effort and preparation. Teammates and coaches praise how his competitive edge—honed on BMX tracks—translates into dependable, high-motor play that elevates those around him.
