The New York Yankees are opting to let shortstop Anthony Volpe complete his minor-league rehab instead of returning for the series against the Baltimore Orioles. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that Jose Caballero's strong performance is influencing this decision.
New York Yankees Don't Seem to Want Anthony Volpe Back
New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe could have returned for the team's four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles, but instead, the Yankees are allowing him to finish his minor-league rehab stint, which ends Monday.
Manager Aaron Boone is trying to be coy when it comes to Volpe, but his comments on the situation are pretty easy to read.
"We'll kind of reevaluate where we are after Sunday," Boone said. "I don't think it hurts to have some more runway for him. Caby's (Jose Caballero) obviously playing very well for us. So I just want it to be a situation where we're giving Anthony every chance to come in and be successful but also taking note of what's going on with our club, as well."
Translation: "We don't want Volpe to mess up the chemistry of this team right now."
Caballero has certainly been playing well in recent weeks after an absolutely horrific start. Not only does he lead all shortstops in defensive runs saved at the moment, but he has also been hitting the ball incredibly well.
Meanwhile, Volpe was last seen slashing .212/.272/.391 in 2025 while also falling off a cliff defensively, so perhaps Boone actually feels that Caballero is the better option at the current point in time.
Anthony Volpe is not returning because the Yankees want him to finish his minor-league rehab stint, allowing him more time to prepare.
Aaron Boone mentioned that they will reevaluate Volpe's status after Sunday and emphasized the importance of giving him a chance to succeed.
Jose Caballero is currently playing shortstop for the Yankees and has been performing well, which is a factor in the decision to delay Volpe's return.

Of course, you do have to wonder how long that will last given Caballero's history. He is a lifetime .232/.316/.364 hitter, and he tends to be more valuable in a super utility role rather than as an everyday player at one position.
But there is no doubting how well the Yankees are playing right now, and it seems clear as day that Boone doesn't want to mess with it.
In a way, you can't blame him. Volpe isn't Giancarlo Stanton. He is not going to represent an immediate force in the lineup as soon as he returns. At the same time, though, you kind of get the feeling that the Caballero experiment will go sour sooner rather than later.
Caballero is a terrific bench player capable of playing virtually any position, but is he an everyday starter? Probably not.
Not that Volpe has shown that he is a very capable starter thus far, but it's important to remember that he was playing pretty well before the shoulder injury last May.
New York can do the unthinkable and option Volpe down to the minors after his rehab stint is over, but chances are, the Yanks will recall him just to at least have him on the roster.
But is Volpe instantly going to reclaim his job as starting shortstop with no deliberation? That doesn't appear to be the case.
