New York Yankees Have to Consider Spencer Jones Now, Right?
Well, Jasson Dominguez's return to the New York Yankees lasted all of two games before an injury occurred, as he was hit on the elbow during the team's loss to the Texas Rangers on Wednesday and is now facing a potential IL stint.
The Yankees just designated Randal Grichuk for assignment, and while they could bring him back, it's not exactly an exciting option. Max Schuemann is currently on the roster, but he doesn't inspire much confidence, either.
So why not do what they should have done before recalling Dominguez and finally promote Spencer Jones to the big leagues?
Yes, Jones is still striking out, having fanned 37 times over 110 plate appearances. But he is slashing .242/.364/.538 with seven home runs and 30 RBI in 26 games.
It's also worth noting that Jones' strikeout rate has decreased considerably over the last couple of weeks, and he is absolutely tearing the cover off the ball.
Also, unlike Dominguez, Jones is actually a good defender. While Dominguez did play left field on Wednesday, no one feels comfortable with him out there. Jones, on the other hand, is a defensive wiz who can give Aaron Judge some days off, and Aaron Boone can rest easy in the process.
Jasson Dominguez was hit on the elbow during the game, leading to a potential stint on the injured list.
With Dominguez injured and other roster options lacking confidence, promoting Spencer Jones could provide a stronger alternative for the team.
Randal Grichuk was recently designated for assignment by the Yankees, and while he could be brought back, he is not seen as an exciting option.

Jones turns 25 years old in a couple of weeks. It's hard to even consider him a prospect anymore. I understand sending him down to Triple-A to start the season because of the outfield glut, but at this point, what is New York waiting for?
Every day Jones spends in the minor leagues, his value dips. Teams aren't going to be incredibly interested in trading for a guy who still hasn't hit the majors at the age of 25. So what exactly is the plan here?
If Dominguez does ultimately hit the injured list, Jones should be promoted immediately. He was phenomenal in Spring Training, and he is on quite a hit streak right now down in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
At the very least, the Yankees could showcase Jones for potential trades. Keeping him down in the minors is only going to inhibit his value between now and the August deadline.
But the hope is that Jones can come up and establish himself as a cornerstone piece for the Bronx Bombers moving forward, just like they initially had hoped when they drafted him out of Vanderbilt in 2022.
Make the move, Yankees. Promote Jones to The Show, and see what the kid has.
